With the ever increasing popularity of vaping over smoking it is no wonder DIY eliquid has been on the rise. DIYing eliquid is like those former smokers who used to roll their own cigarettes. While it comes with an upfront cost and some elbow grease to get it done it can be worth it for the amount you save. Mixing ejuice is much like baking. You can find a ton of recipes online from other DIYer's whom have created recipes that taste good and they want to share. The community is very supportive of DIY and I hope you will feel confident after reading this that you can do it too!
Depending on how serious you are about getting into DIY you will need to pony up some cash to get materials to get started. The upfront cost can vary anywhere from $20-$300 depending on how crazy you go with grabbing different flavorings. What can also be helpful is buying a couple bottles of professionally made eliquid to compare your homemade creations to. This will allow you to see where you are at in terms of quality and flavor. What's most important is that you buy the best quality flavorings and ingredients you can afford. Here is the comprehensive list broken into two categories. Essential and Bonus.
Essential
Bonus
Now that we know what we need to purchase to make our eliquid it's time to find out what ratios the pro's use and what all these things are needed for!.
VG(vegetable glycerin)
VG as it is commonly referred to is used as a base for your vape juice. It has a slightly sweet taste and is derived from many different sources. What is the most important to remember is that you buy one that is USP grade which means it has a purity of 99.7% or higher. The best type of VG to use is Palm based as it has a very neutral taste and is sweet. Make sure to store VG in a sealed container as it is Hygroscopic so it absorbs water from the air which dilutes purity. VG is thick however it is not an efficient flavor carrier, we will talk more about this later. VG is what is responsible for creating nice thick vapor.
For Freebase low nicotine eliquids use at 60%-90%
For Salt nicotine vape liquid or high nicotine mouth to lunch use at 40%-60%
PG(propylene glycol)
PG is another base used in eliquid, it also is what makes up most flavorings as it is an amazing flavor carrier. It can have a slightly acrid taste however it is odorless. If you have ever been around a fog machine this is what they fill them with. PG is responsible for the throat hit level of the eliquid as well as thinning the viscosity based on what your end use is. Do remember to take into account that your flavoring already has PG in it so you may or may not need to add much of this. Too much in a high output device can make the vape feel harsh.
For Freebase low nicotine use at 30%-10%
For Salt High nicotine use at 60%-40%
Nicotine
Nicotine is highly addictive and can cause side effects like increased heart rate, high blood pressure and nicotine withdrawal. While vaping is considered orders of magnitudes safer than tobacco smoke or chewing tobacco it is important to know nicotine is addictive.
Nicotine comes in 2 forms, salt nicotine and freebase nicotine. If you want big clouds and use a sub ohm device you want to use freebase nicotine. If you want a discrete device that is mouth to lung inhale you want salt nicotine. Salt nicotine is much faster acting and can make you feel lightheaded if you use to high of a nicotine strength. The best way is to try some commercially available premade eliquids to see what nicotine works for you before you start mixing yourself.
For Freebase use at 1mg-18mg
For Salt use at 10mg-50mg
Flavoring
This is what gives your eliquid its taste and tickles your taste buds. There are a vast selection of flavors to choose from but be sure you buy GRAS certified flavorings from a reputable company. TFA, Capella's, Flavor Art, Flavor West and Loranns are some good options. Do know if you have an allergy to a certain thing like nuts it may also translate to flavorings as many use natural and artificial sources. Do not use any flavorings that are oil based and not water soluble.
For freebase and salt use at 1%-40% depending on how strong the flavoring is.
Sweetener
You like sweet eliquid? Well now is your chance to make it as sweet as you want or not. The most common sweetener is Sucralose at 2% however there are also stevia and others available.
For freebase and salt nicotine use at 0%-5% depending on your personal preference.
Bottles
You are most likely going to need bottles to mix and store your eliquid. Some very important features you need to take into account are that they are childproof and have a way to dispense. The most common bottle used for eliquid are called Chubby Gorilla bottles which I strongly urge you to use. They are the only bottle designed specifically for use with ejuice.
Labels
You are going to want to label all your creations. Also date them so you know when they expire. I also like to suggest putting a code on them or name that corresponds with the recipe you are using. Eliquid expires 2 years from date of creation for most ejuice.
Safety Equipment
Nicotine in higher concentration is dangerous and you are taking a risk handling it. It is important if you have nicotine at higher concentrations that you wear protective equipment when mixing. Do not get on skin or in eyes. Keep away from children and locked away. And do not ingest high nicotine. Wear gloves, goggles and a mask when handling high nicotine.
Vape Mod
You are going to need a device to try out your own DIY eliquid. If you are using freebase then check out a sub ohm tank or similar and a box mod. For salt nicotine grab a pod based device like the caliburn.
Flavor Enhancers
While these are not required you may want to try out some sour or even menthol. These can be used to taste but are not mandatory.
Ultrasonic Bath
Some ejuice that have creams or bakery flavors can really benefit from steeping. Steeping is basically just aging. It may not taste as full flavored right when mixed as it will in 2 or 3 weeks just sitting. To speed this up some users buy jewelry ultra sonic baths and speed up this steeping process.
Specialty Bottles
This isn't really recommended but the world is your oyster. Buy what bottles work for you. Just remember to be safe and keep your ejuice from children. Child proof is a necessity.
Now you know what ratio's and ingredients go into DIY ejuice. Making ejuice is trial and error and can take time to get the hang of. Just stick with it and reap the savings!.
